So many artists are doing so much at all times that it truly is a major blessing for them to take time and do interviews. But there are times when they just don’t have time to talk over the phone. After doing shows for days and talking to millions of people, in their down time they really need to save their voices and just have time to sit. It’s in those times when artist like Aaron Shust sit and answer emails, blogs, and things that fans as well as interviews. So while I would love to talk to all the artist and bands personally sometimes it’s just not possible. But it is in those times when I can only read what an artist has written in response to my questions to know who they really are inside. Sometimes I get really short answers because they are so busy and tired and need to spend down time with their families. But sometimes those short and sweet answers say more than any two page answer. This is one of those times when after reading I just smiled and said "I really like this guy". Without ever seeing Aaron or speaking to him on the phone my heart was warmed by his answers and I got a really awesome feeling of peace from his interview answers. So I simply present them to you as Aaron wrote them to me. I especially love his answer about Jesus Christ. This is a man of faith that I can’t wait to meet someday.
CS: What age where you when you knew you wanted to be in music?
Aaron: I saw Smitty's Live Set concert on TV and was hooked.
CS: Where you brought up in a Christian home?
Aaron: Yes. Not only church going family but one who lived their faith at home too.
CS: What was it like growing up for you?
Aaron: A house of love, full of music, laughter, traditions and enough activities to never leave us bored.
CS: How and when did you come to faith?
Aaron: My mother led me to a decision to make Jesus my Lord at 4 years old. I remember it well.
CS: How do you stay grounded in the faith when on the road?
Aaron: Disciplines: reading the Word, prayer, keeping a community of spiritual growth with my band members.
CS: What church do you go to?
Aaron: Christ Church in Suwannee, GA, a new granddaughter church plant of Perimeter Church where I served as Worship Leader from 2000-2005
CS: Have you ever had a God moment that you can share with us?
Aaron: I think it's important to clarify a definition of a 'God Moment' first: I think God is at work in more ways than we ever notice, so the question for me is 'do I ever pay attention to what God is doing?’ The fact that it's raining right now, watering the earth, or that my 2nd son is about to take his first step are two God moments that amaze me frankly.
CS: What person in the bible would you say you relate to or admire most and why?
Aaron: I admire Daniel for his commitment to the disciplines of pursuing God and probably relate more David or Peter in their lower moments.
CS: What scripture do you cling to in hard time?
Aaron: I will never leave you or forsake you. (Hebrews 13:5)
CS: Who is Jesus to you and why do you choose to believe in Him?
Aaron: Jesus is the one and only God, wrapped in skin. He showed us how to live, how to love and took our punishment in the death we deserve so that we could live freely and eternally despite our inability to live the way he demands: holy. I choose to believe that because not believing it is pretty hopeless. Besides, loving selflessly is a better way to live.
CS: Why did you choose Christian over secular music?
Aaron: I didn't actually. I write lyrics about what inspires me. Other people create the categories.
CS: How has your music evolved since you started?
Aaron: Since I started playing music? I was 3 when I began to sing, 7 when I started piano lessons, 13 when I started playing guitar and 17 when I started writing songs. Hopefully I've developed in overall musicality, vocal performance and songwriting.
CS: What was the inspiration for the new Album?
Aaron: Writing about life. Things that jumped off pages of the bible or books that were noteworthy. Those all combine to provide a snapshot of where my mind had been in the previous two years. The theme seemed to be reliance on grace and submitting to God's control.
CS: What is the overall theme of the new Album?
Aaron: Ha...see above
CS: What song on the new CD most speaks to your heart? Why?
Aaron: Still you love me. Because it's Grace 101. The basics.
CS: What has been your biggest challenge as a Christian artist?
Aaron: Writing music that's personal for me in my relationship with God instead of what I think will work for radio.
CS: What message do you want people to get from your music?
Aaron: God's grace is infinitely greater than all our sin. Sounds like a hymn.
CS: What message of hope would you give your fans in these times where there is so much despair and worry for tomorrow?
Aaron: God is fully aware of everything thing that's going on. Every lost job, Every lost child, Every disease. Unless we believe that God is apathetic and doesn't care or that He's wringing His hands in worry, struggling to contrive a solution, we must believe that He is in control and has a perfect plan, with the mother of all plot twists if you would, that will blow our minds in the last chapter! Hold fast! Trust in Him!
Aaron just released a new Christmas EP called Aaron Shust Christmas. He also has a new album called Take Over that is available in stores now. Aarons music is simply words from his heart that as he said is put into a category of Christian music by others but it is because the words that are in his heart are words of a Christian man. It’s actually pretty cool that he simply writes and what comes out is Christian music.
