Hip-Hop has gone through many phases in the past decade. We have seen people get rich making songs about big pimping, getting shot and being proud of it, and simply bragging about their money and fame. The fame they brag about influences young people to want to have the things they have and live the lives they live. We who are believers know that the lives they live will only lead to eternal darkness. They may be rich in tangible things but they are poor, blind, and dead yet youth in America want what they have because they don’t know anything better.
Jesus Christ gives us riches that this life has never known, life that is eternal, and crowns that will never tarnish or fade. Hip-Hop is now seeing new life from those who have eternal life. Life that is everlasting, hope that is unending, truth that is undeniable, and music that is more creative. New Christian record labels are starting to emerge with artists who are all about spreading the gospel message. One record label (HolyZone Records) has a host of young artist who are on fire for The Lord and not ashamed to boast about the faith they have, the hope they have, and the everlasting riches. Mr. Henry Flores known as “Chip” to those around him, has started his own Christian Hip-Hop label to show the world a better message through the music.
We were fortunate to do an interview with HolyZone Records. Chip’s own daughter is a part of his record label along with a other young believers. Please enjoy the interview we had with Chip of HolyZone Records.
When and how did you come up with the concept for Holy Zone Records?
One night in 2000 hanging out with the 1st HZ (HolyZone) groups “Turning Point”. We were kind of done with rehearsal and just tossing names around. HolyZone popped up. No one liked it at first but me…..
Why did you choose to do a Christian record label?
I was tired of all the nonsensical flat out dumb music promoting sex, drugs, crime etc. I felt it was time to use our cultures music to inflate, not deflate.
Is you label limited to Hip-Hop?
No, we also have Pop, R&B, Alternative rock and coming soon….Latin!
How do you find the artists to sign?
We don’t, the Lord does. He kind of directs them to us.
What qualifies an artist to be signed to your label?
A servant’s heart and a bonifide LOVE for the Lord!
What has been a challenge for you as a Christian label that you may not face if you were a secular label?
Well, the fact that many “Christian” radio stations won’t play your music unless they don’t know of you. Well, how will they know of you if they don’t play your stuff? Also, some “Christian” stations use that pay to Play format…….they call it love offerings. I’m all for that but set prices? Wow. The secular world kind of plays anybody’s stuff. They promote the underground rappers/artists way better than Christian stations.
